Pothupara is a picturesque location between Kuttikkanam and Elappara in Peerumedu taluk in Idukki district. The history of Amala Bhavan is inseparably connected with that of the High Range Medical Centre Pothupara which was originally a hospital for the poor plantation workers of the region. In 1978 Mar Joseph Powathil, the first Bishop of Kanjirappally,took up the management of the hospital in collaboration with the FCC sisters and thus Amala Bhavan FC Convent came into being on 8th september 1978.The sisters stayed in some of the hospital rooms and rendered their services in the hospital and outside introducing a number of schemes for the welfare of the poor families.It was in 1990 that the sisters got a seperate convent. In 2008 the hospital was closed and at present the sisters are engaged in various services in the locality and in the neibhouring parish Elappara.
